The infamous serial killer Son of Sam, who went on a murder spree that sent New York into a panic in 1977 was denied his first bid for parole on last week after serving 25 years in prison. David Berkowitz, 49, who is serving a 365-year prison term for killing six people and wounding seven others, has developed a reputation as a model prisoner but no one, including Berkowitz, expected him to be released. 'In your interview, you demonstrated limited understanding of the motivation and insight into your criminal behavior,' said a letter to Berkowitz from the New York State Division of Parole in Albany, notifying him that parole was denied. Berkowitz' rampage began in July 1976 and continued into 1977. He was arrested in August that year, 10 days after killing his last victim. He was tried, convicted and sentenced to six consecutive life terms. Berkowitz, who is imprisoned at the Sullivan Correctional Facility, became a born-again Christian in 1987 and has written to authorities to express his remorse for the killings, saying he deserved to spend the rest of his life in prison. Berkowitz produced two evangelical videos in prison, entitled: 'Son of Sam/Son of Hope' and 'The Choice is Yours with David Berkowitz.' |
