An Allegheny County jail officer is behind bars Tuesday and charged with assaulting an inmate last month. Thomas Towers III, 38, of the South Side, was charged Monday with simple assault and official oppression. Inmate Vaughn Parker told county detectives that Towers kicked him repeatedly. Several inmates said they witnessed the assault. The incident occurred June 29, was reported a half-hour later at the jail, but county police were not asked to investigate until July 5, according to a police affidavit. Towers, an officer for 11 years, has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the case. |
