Christmas Day dinner turned foul last week when 170 inmates at the Union Correctional Institution in Raiford, Fla. got sick from what officials suspect may have been bad turkey. The dinner was served at noon Thursday and inmates began coming down with diarrhea hours later, said Sterling Ivey, Department of Corrections spokesman. Two inmates required intravenous fluids and the other 168 received over-the-counter remedies from the prison's clinic. Officials suspect turkey caused the illness because all the sick inmates had the turkey, Ivey said. Prison officials sent turkey samples to the health department in Union County. It usually takes between four and six weeks to get results, Ivey said. All the sickened inmates have recovered, Ivey said. The turkey was prepared at the prison by Aramark, a private contractor that provides food services to Florida inmates, according to The Associated Press. Union Correctional houses 1,300 inmates. |
