| DNA Matches Inmate To 26-Year-Old Murder |

The rape and murder of a Sacramento woman went unsolved for 26 years, but a new arrest was made in the case yesterday, just days before the suspect's release from prison. The arrest came as a surprise to the family of Ollie George. For more that a quarter century, they wondered who brutally killed their daughter. 'Ollie was murdered 26 years ago. And I don't think there's a day goes by that some of us don't encounter some feelings about it,' said the victim's mother, Jeanne George. On Feb. 23, 1976, George's car broke down in a Del Paso Heights parking lot. She called her family. But by the time they arrived, George was missing. Her body was found three days later in a Sacramento County drainage ditch. Although authorities could not solve the crime, they did preserve the evidence. Detectives are now running old evidence from unsolved cases through DNA labs and databases. And in George's case, they found a match. Investigators say that DNA evidence connects one of the original suspects, Dennis Nelson, 46, to the crime. Nelson had an alibi during the original investigation. Nelson is serving time at Folsom Prison for an unrelated crime and was due to be released next week. But now, he will be charged with murder. 'Because of his criminal record, there's no doubt in my mind, and I'm sure the [district attorney] will agree with me, he would have re-offended. With DNA, we're able to keep him in jail. And hopefully, he'll never see the light of day again,' said Sacramento County Sheriff Lou Blanas. Nelson will not be eligible for the death penalty because it was suspended in 1976. |
