A state legislator is asking state police to investigate a vulgar underground newsletter at the Hartford Correctional Center. A female correction officer gave the newsletter, which is filled with graphic sexual references, to state Sen. Edith Prague, D-Columbia, recently. Prague's Labor and Public Employees Committee is currently investigating allegations that prison officials have mishandled or ignored sexual harassment complaints filed by female correction officers. The newsletter, made to resemble the agency's official newsletter, accuses two female correction officers, one unidentified, of performing oral sex on superiors. The newsletter refers to one of the officers as a ''whore.'' Correction spokesman Brian Garnett said department Commissioner John Armstrong became aware of the publication in January and issued two memos to prison employees condemning the newsletters. Garnett also said the commissioner launched an internal investigation, but was unable to determine the author. Prague showed the newsletter to representatives from various women's right groups, who described Armstrong's correspondence to employees as weak and questioned why he didn't call police. Correction Officer Teresa Trainor said she believes that one of the passages was an attack on her character. Trainor has filed a sexual harassment lawsuit based on the newsletter and other incidents she says occurred at the Hartford Correctional Center. ''The department has allowed it to go on,'' said Trainor, noting that the newsletter she received was the fourth edition created by the anonymous author. |
