Autopsy results were inconclusive in determining what killed a 26-year-old Hibbing man while he was in police custody following what was reportedly a violent arrest on July 14 that included police using body restraints and Mace.
Three Hibbing police officers are on paid leave while Virginia, Minn., police and state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension agents investigate the death that occurred at the entrance of the St. Louis County jail in the Iron Range city.
Results of toxicology tests on Lewis were expected to take several weeks, said Virginia Police Chief Dana Waldron.
Lionel Antoine Lewis died after what the Hibbing Tribune said was a medical emergency at the St. Louis County Jail after police and two sheriff's deputies said they had to use Mace to subdue and arrest him after receiving a call about possible domestic violence.
The newspaper said the Hibbing jail was full so the Hibbing officers took Lewis to the county jail in Virginia.
At about 6 p.m. an emergency medical call came out at the entrance to the county jail, and Lewis was taken by ambulance to a Virginia hospital as officers were performing CPR and where Lewis was pronounced dead, according to a broadcast report in the Twin Cities.
Hibbing Police Chief John Maras told the newspaper that he expressed confidence in the three officers who are on paid administrative leave, a required step as Virginia police detectives and agents from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigate the case. According to court records, Lewis had a history of complaints and charges filed against him in St. Louis County, including domestic abuse, harassment, terroristic threats and property damage.
