Mich. Voters to Decide on Drug Sentencing Laws

Voters in Michigan are likely to have the opportunity to decide whether to revise the state's drug sentencing laws to provide for treatment instead of prison time for offenders, the Detroit Free Press reported July 10.
The change to the state's constitution also would do away with mandatory minimum sentences for drug sellers.
Organizers of the Campaign for New Drug Policies (http://www.drugreform.org/michigan) have obtained 450,000 signatures, many more than the 303,000 needed to place the proposal on the ballot. The state Bureau of Elections is currently reviewing the signatures and expects to be completed by mid-August.
Opponents of the measure, including prosecutors and some judges, see it as a step toward the legalization of drug use. They also believe it would make jailing drug dealers more difficult.
Supporters of the proposal favor its emphasis on drug prevention and treatment.
The measure is similar to ballot proposals approved in recent years in California and Arizona.
