A Massachusetts prison inmate was charged recently with sending five anthrax hoax letters to government officials and the media last month. According to a federal indictment made public July 18, Jerry Tolbert, 43, sent threatening letters laced with white powder to Acting Governor Jane Swift, the Suffolk district attorney, the head of the US Postal Inspection Service in Boston, a reporter for the Boston Herald, and the publisher of The Boston Globe. Tolbert, who is serving time in South Bay Correctional Center, had been scheduled for release July 19. The anthrax hoax charges each carry a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. |
