The District of Columbia is getting more federal help to keep ex-offenders out of prison.
The U.S. Justice Department has come up with $2 million to ease the transition for convicts facing imminent release.
Mayor Tony Williams says the money will be used for job training, counseling and substance abuse intervention services.
The mayor says the grant will not only reduce crime but will also improve safety and public health in the city. He also says it will help keep some former inmates from returning to jail.
