An inmate serving a life sentence for murder hit an officer in the head with a hammer and stole his truck outside a prison Sunday, but crashed and then apparently slit his wrists and died, authorities said. Allen Laborde, 42, was unconscious when he was found about an hour after the 7 a.m. escape. He died in a hospital, said Warden Venetia Michael of Wade Correctional Center. Dayton Finley, who was hit in the head, and another officer, Shirley Harrison, whose car Laborde struck, were in the hospital for observation but appeared fine, Michael said. Michael said the incident began when Finley and Laborde, who worked at the prison's hog farm, headed out to a highway to repair a gate and began talking about deer. Laborde said he saw a deer, and pointed. Finley turned and Laborde hit him several times in the back of the head with a hammer. 'They got out of the truck, and the inmate told the officer to leave, walk away,' said Michael. Michael said the injured officer notified the deputy warden. About 5 miles down the highway, Michael said, the inmate crashed into Harrison's car, then into the woods. 'It appeared that he cut both his wrists and his forearms. It appears they're self-inflicted, but we don't know,' she said. She said Laborde was sentenced to prison for killing a young woman in 1979. She did not have details of the murder. |
