Over 140 inmates are facing disciplinary action after deputies discovered several pieces of contraband during a jail sweep at the Onondaga County Justice Center in Syracuse, N.Y. Several days of planning went into the surprise search. It took deputies thirteen and a half hours Monday to strip search 561 inmates and comb their cells. Everything from cocaine and homemade alcohol to weapons made from hard plastic spoons was recovered. Deputies said it's impossible to completely prevent contraband since New York State allows inmates to kiss and hold hands with visitors. But, workers at the jail say they learn a new trick after every jail sweep. "They are very ingenuous. You know, they have twenty-four hours a day to think about where they are going to put something and try to hide it from us. You know we have twenty-four hours a day to try and figure out where they put it. It can be a very big Where's Waldo puzzle," said Captin Vince Wasilewski. Many inmates were caught hoarding extra uniforms and blankets. One person made a paper-mache toilet seat. Inmates caught with dangerous contraband will face criminal charges. Others will do time in lockdown. |
