In a classic-style jailbreak, three suspected drug traffickers and gunmen - two of them alleged members of the U.S. prison-based Mexican Mafia gang - broke out of a Mexican prison using a ladder and a 21-foot (7-meter) rope, police said July 25. The warden, security chief and two officers at the state prison in Nuevo Laredo, across the border from Laredo, Texas, were taken into custody for questioning following the jailbreak, as authorities investigated whether the inmates got help from prison staff in the escape. 'We are investigating how they managed to escape, and whether they had some sort of inside help,' said state police commander Arturo Pedroza Aguirre. The three men - two of whom were arrested in March after a shootout with police - scaled a prison wall and lowered themselves to the ground on the other side. A detachment of federal police were assigned to help guard the prison after the escape, while state police searched for the escaped inmates. |
