| Connecticut Police to Install Phones in Jail Cells |

East Haven police are about to give new meaning to the phrase ''cell phone.'' The police department has hired a Texas company to install phones in its jail cells that will allow prisoners to make unlimited collect calls. The phones are the size of standard pay phones and will be mounted to the walls in each cell within the next four to six weeks. The company installing them, Texas Inmate Phone Co., said they are virtually indestructible. The phones have no cords or loose parts because the earpieces and mouthpieces are mounted directly to the face of the unit, making them similar to intercoms and speakerphones. The phones have been installed in police departments around the state, including East Hartford and Enfield. Prisoners will still be allowed one free call, but additional calls will cost $5 for every 15 minutes. Officials say the phones are expected to decrease prisoner complaints about restricted phone use and increase safety by eliminating the need to release detainees from their cells so that they can use the phone. ''When you are arrested and placed into detention, you are innocent until proven guilty and you should have an opportunity to call whoever can help you,'' Police Chief Leonard Gallo told the New Haven Register. ''People should have the opportunity to call their loved ones and have a private conversation.'' The phone system won't allow prisoners to harass people, because a person has to accept the charges during a collect call and the system will not allow a prisoner to call a number again if a call is rejected the first time. |
