A local man's crime was running from the law, but on July 28, he got a chance to run with the law. Michael Logar, 33, ran well enough to shave a few days off his prison sentence. Logar's sentence was modified in Painesville Municipal Court after he completed a court-ordered 5-mile race over the weekend. He had pleaded guilty last month to running from an Ohio state trooper who was pulling him over for drunken driving. Judge Mike Cicconetti sentenced Logar to spend 179 days in jail and work release, but he promised to cut Logar's prison time depending on how he finished in the annual Johnnycake Jog. Since Logar came in fifth place, he still has to serve five days in jail. 'The judge, by giving me this sentence and having me do some jail time, did give me time to stay away from alcohol, which is what I needed to do,' Logar said. He will still have to perform the work-release portion of his sentence. 'Here is a person who was given an extra chance, perhaps maybe more than he should have been given. He took that extra chance and made something of himself. He took his behavior and directed it in a positive manner, and if this is just the start for the rest of his life, I would be very happy,' Cicconetti said. Logar could have faced six months in jail for the charges of resisting arrest and obstructing police business. |
