An inmate at South Woods State Prison in New Jersey was hospitalized after being stabbed late Sunday morning, according to the state Department of Corrections. DOC spokesman Chris Carden said that inmate Marco Maldonado was taken to Brigdeton Hospital after being allegedly stabbed by fellow inmate Jose Ortiz. Maldonado's condition was not released by the hospital, but Carden said witnesses described him as "awake and alert" when he was taken to the ambulance. The type of weapon used and the motive for the stabbing have yet to be determined, according to Carden. The incident is being investigated by DOC's Special Investigations Division. Maldonado is currenty serving a three-year sentence for aggravated assault, while Ortiz is serving a two to five-year sentence on drug charges. |
