The Pennsylvania Supreme Court unanimously overturned a death sentence last week and ordered a new trial for Billy Brooks, who was convicted of slaying a fellow inmate at Holmesburg Prison in 1990. The victim, 25-year-old Eric Vaughn, was stabbed to death with a homemade knife during an argument over a bathrobe. Vaughn was the son of Donald T. Vaughn, who was then superintendent of the maximum-security Graterford Prison and who is now a deputy secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. Brooks, 45, was granted a new murder trial because his court-appointed lawyer, Thomas Turner, did not meet with him before the start of his 1992 death-penalty trial. |
