Birmingham, AL - November 17, 2011

On March 1, 2011, the North Carolina Department of Corrections (NCDOC) re-awarded NaphCare Inc., the department’s nephrology services contract for three additional years with option for two additional years. NaphCare has partnered with the NCDOC since 2001. The contract includes services at three facilities: McCain Correctional Hospital, Central Prison, and North Carolina Women’s Dialysis.

As part of the contract, NaphCare is constructing a 12-station modular building at Hoke Correctional Institute to be used for on-site nephrology and dialysis services replacing the location at McCain Correctional Hospital. Ground breaking for the new Hoke Correctional Institute started on June 1st and became fully operational on November 7, 2011. Photos of the construction for the facility are available online at www.naphcare.com.
McCain Correctional Hospital was closed in March 2011. The facility was built in the 1920’s as a state tuberculosis sanatorium. In 1983, the state deeded the property to the Division of Prisons within the NC Department of Correction. In recent years, it was used to treat male prisoners who were seriously ill, disabled or feeble because of age. It was a minimum custody facility. “The NaphCare staff looks forward to continuing a tradition of excellent dialysis care on the Hoke Campus,” said Rebecca Kennison, NaphCare’s area manager. “Maintaining McCain dialysis as an offsite satellite location of Hoke Correctional Institute presented logistical and communication challenges, both for the DOC facility and the NaphCare staff at McCain. Officers and nursing staff collaborated seamlessly to ensure that safety and patient care were always the first orders of the day, despite the logistical challenges.”

NaphCare, Inc., is the leading provider of on-site correctional dialysis services and has provided nephrology services to county, state, and federal correctional facilities across the country for the past 12 years. Services include hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, inpatient management, and Nephrology consultations. NaphCare currently partners with nine additional state departments of correction around the country.

Headquartered in Birmingham, AL, NaphCare has over two decades of experience managing a full range of healthcare programs for inmates. More than 900 dedicated healthcare professionals currently provide services to more than 68,000 inmates in 25 states for 45 clients.
