BI Incorporated, SOBERLINK enter distribution agreement for SL2 alcohol monitoring system

Article:
BI Incorporated and SOBERLINK announced today that BI will be the exclusive master distributor of the SOBERLINK SL2 for the criminal justice market. The SL2 is an innovative handheld device, both cellular and GPS enabled, that allows community corrections agencies to monitor offender sobriety in the community. BI is a national provider of electronic monitoring technology and monitoring services for community corrections and immigration agencies. SOBERLINK was founded in 2010 and began selling SOBERLINK devices in 2011. Today, SOBERLINK transmits more than 10,000 remote breath tests each day.

Under terms of the distribution agreement, BI becomes the exclusive master distributor of the SOBERLINK’s 2nd generation SL2, taking over all existing reseller relationships in the United States with the exception of Texas and Oklahoma. “Community corrections agencies throughout the U.S. are often required to monitor offenders for sobriety as a condition of release or supervision. SOBERLINK is the leading provider of handheld remote breath technology, and the SL2 is a simple, elegant solution for truly mobile alcohol monitoring,” said Jock Waldo, Vice President, Marketing and EM Operations.

"It is our continued goal at SOBERLINK to build the most user friendly, discreet, and reliable alcohol monitoring product in the world. Partnering with BI will enable us to support the tremendous growth that has come with the achievement of our second generation product, SL2. We have been on a yearlong search for a synergistic partnership in offender monitoring that can take our technology to the next level. We are confident that by partnering with BI, our customers will continue to receive the best SOBERLINK has to offer,” said Brad Keays, CEO, SOBERLINK.

Consumed alcohol is absorbed into the blood stream. The exchange of alcohol to the breath occurs in the deep lung region. Through a calculated conversion, the SL2 measures alcohol in the body by its concentration in breath, also known as breath alcohol concentration (BrAC).

The SOBERLINK SL2 is a sleek, one-piece monitoring device that incorporates cellular and GPS technology to transmit BrAC results in real-time. By incorporating location monitoring technology, a record of where the test was submitted is logged. Also, the SL2 includes a high-resolution infrared camera for color photos that identify the individual submitting the test. Other product specifications include:
  • Dart fuel-cell sensor
  • Telit Cellular and GPS module
  • Lithium ion battery with more than five days of battery life
  • Automated client text-message alerts
  • Automated violation alerts

SOBERLINK SL2 features include:
  • Portability in a discreet, handheld device
  • GPS location and color photo provided with every test
  • Excellent Verizon wireless coverage and extensive reporting
  • Discreet offender notification system

As with many of BI’s electronic monitoring products, the SL2 lends itself to an offender-payment model. The offender-pay model, in use with most agencies using the SL2 today, allows the agency to charge a client a minimal daily fee to offset the cost to administer the technology as the individual lives and works in the community. Offenders typically pay a fee equal to an hour of their wages; a sliding scale often applies.
