Nearly half a million dollars stolen from Las Vegas inmates

More than 400 thousand dollars is missing and someone on the city's inside is to blame. A nine month investigation finds that someone from the North Las Vegas Detention Center is stealing from the inmate's accounts. As News 3's Lisa Hidalgo reports, it's not the inmates that are affected, it's you, the taxpayer.
"Everywhere you turn around, if it's not the casino, it's somewhere. Somebody's stealing." These inmates playing basketball have no idea that 400 thousand dollars was stolen from them. "It's business as usual for them." Business as usual because the cash they came in with, they'll leave with. It's money that the taxpayer is now ultimately responsible for.
"I don't think there's anybody in this city that's not upset." The money was stolen over a two year period from the inmate trust fund, used for who knows what by someone on the inside. "Until the DA has had time to sort through this and make some determination as to who will be charged, then we're not going to release the names of the suspects."
But North Las Vegas residents say the names will only answer some of their questions. "Four hundred thousand dollars. I'd like to know how he got away with it. Somebody's not doing their job."
"I can't even grasp the concept of how much money that would be in one shot."
"What I say to the taxpayer is that we're doing everything we can to be sure that people are brought to justice for this and the city is doing everything they can to be sure this never happens again." It's an investigation that taxpayers say will only cost them more, and ultimately bring little justice. "I can see it happening again and again and again."
Information of the missing 400 thousand dollars surfaced yesterday. It was the same day the city's Chief of Detention and Corrections, Ken Ellingson, announced his retirement. The city manager's office says it will not comment if the two incidents are related.
